Training Position – Internship / Residency / Residency & PhD
A training position is available at the Institute of Animal Pathology, University of Bern, Switzerland, offering the opportunity to join our comprehensive animal pathology center.Pathology is a central bridge between clinical veterinary disciplines and basic research. Thorough training in this field opens up diverse career opportunities in science and academia, governmental authorities, private diagnostic laboratories, and the pharmaceutical industry.
Scope of this position
The successful candidate will focus on the training in morphological pathology of farm, companion & zoo animals during the first year, which can also account for an internship. At the end of the first year, we will jointly evaluate the candidate's interests and career goals. The training can then continue along one of two pathways:- Residency in Veterinary Anatomic Pathology – up to three additional years of structured diagnostic training and preparation for the board examination of the European College of Veterinary Pathologists (ECVP); or
- Combined Residency/PhD Program – integrating pathology residency training with an intensive research program leading to a PhD through the Graduate School for Cellular and Biomedical Sciences at the University of Bern (six-year appointment).
Both pathways provide structured preparation for the ECVP board examination. Candidates pursuing the combined Residency/PhD program will have the opportunity to conduct research in areas including cancer therapy resistance, DNA repair, and host–pathogen interactions within the collaborative research environment of the University of Bern.

Your profile
We are looking for a highly motivated veterinarian with a strong interest in pathology and research. The following qualifications are required:- a degree in veterinary medicine (Master of Veterinary Medicine, DVM, or equivalent);
- a collaborative mindset and enthusiasm for contributing to our team-based approach to diagnostics, teaching, and research;
- fluency in English and German language skills at a minimum B2 level at the time of the interview.
- Fluency in French is not required but is considered an advantage.
