About Us

The Swiss NSF funded National Centre of Competence (NCCR) CLIM+ supports Switzerland in the transformation towards a climate-resilient society. Together with stakeholders, the interdisciplinary NCCR CLIM+ research community tackles unexplored solution spaces to the climate crisis and develops a blueprint for actionable climate research worldwide. NCCR CLIM+ broadly communicates and shares knowledge, and trains a new generation of experts with the necessary domain and transdisciplinary knowledge. For details: https://www.nccr-climplus.ch/

Within workpackage 3 (Governance of climate extremes and justice), the Public Management and Organization (PMO) team at University of Bern's KPM Center for Public Management (www.kpm.unibe.ch) has been tasked to explore "The role of networked, inter-organizatonal governance arrangements for climate extremes" (task 3.4.). Thus, we offer a 4-year PhD position, starting as soon as possible or by agreement.

Responsibilities

  • Your doctoral work shall focus on the content and context of task 3.4. of the NCCR.
  • You will actively review the literature on network governance in general, and in relation to climate adaptation and climate extremes, as well as conceptualize, collect and analyze qualitative data at relevant research sites.
  • You will collaborate closely with our PMO team, the workpackage 3 task force as well as the broader NCCR Clim+ community.
  • You will contribute to joint conference submissions, research publications and support task coordination (reports, organization of workshops and annual meeting with NCCR Clim+ partners and collaborating organizations).

Requirements

  • You hold a master's degree in a relevant discipline, such as organization/management studies, public management/administration, sociology or political science.
  • You have a solid command of and evidenced interest in qualitative empirical research methods.
  • You are motivated to collaborate with a variety of stakeholders such as federal, cantonal and municipal governments and administrations as well as stakeholders relevant to climate adaptation in other sectors.
  • You have the ability to work independently, meet demanding deadlines, as well as cooperate with diverse project members.
  • You have excellent communication skills (written and oral).
  • German as mother tongue (or an equivalent level), very good English skills are a prerequisite. A command of Swiss German and French would be a plus.
